I-71 South: A Journey Toward Coherence

Life often offers us opportunities to practice what we preach, and for me, July 4th, 2022, became one of those memorable moments. As my husband and I embarked on a journey from Columbus to Cincinnati along the ever-busy I-71 South, little did I know that the drive would transform into a lesson in the very techniques I teach as a Registered HeartMath® Practitioner.

The highway, teeming with holiday travelers and heightened by the chaos of summer construction, was the perfect setting for impatience to bubble over. Barely out of Columbus, I could feel the physical manifestations of stress creeping in—my heart raced, my grip on the steering wheel tightened, and my husband’s well-meaning driving suggestions only added to the tension. But then, somewhere between Stringtown Road and the next exit, I remembered the power of HeartMath® Quick Coherence®.

As I focused on my breath and shifted my attention to my heart, I felt a subtle yet profound change. The world around me—once an overwhelming scene of traffic jams and construction barriers—began to look different. Practicing appreciation, I noticed the little things: the considerate gap left by a semi-tractor trailer, the refreshing coolness of the car’s air conditioner, and the picturesque clouds that framed the landscape. These small blessings reminded me of moments when driving had brought joy, not stress, and the Quick Coherence technique helped me anchor myself in that renewing feeling.

By the time we reached Cincinnati, my perception of the drive had transformed. Sharing my experience with our family, I found myself marveling at how manageable the traffic had seemed and how quickly the time had passed. My husband, on the other hand, looked at me with a mix of amusement and disbelief—a testament to the profound shift that had occurred within me.

Through this newfound calm, I was able to transition seamlessly from the drive into the loving embrace of family time. Without the need for a breather to decompress, I had the

beautiful opportunity to spend an extra 20 precious minutes with my grandson, Ben. As we played and shared laughter, I reflected on how children, with their perceptive hearts, often shy away from adults who carry visible stress. Those moments with Ben were a gift—proof that managing stress not only enhances our inner balance but also nourishes our most treasured relationships.

This drive on I-71 wasn’t just about reaching a destination. It was about reconnecting with the tools that bring balance, appreciation, and clarity, even in life’s most challenging moments. Writing about this experience now, I am reminded of how our stories—whether shared as blogs, poems, or anecdotes—serve as bridges to understanding and connection, helping us navigate the highways of our own hearts.
